Stargazing + Isolation

The Makgadikgadi is one of the largest salt pan systems on earth — an ancient lake bed that dried 10,000 years ago, leaving behind a landscape of such extraordinary vastness that it redefines your sense of scale. Etela Makgadikgadi features a desert-inspired design, set low to the ground to integrate with the flat, open landscape. The 15 standalone chalets with thatched roofs and shaded verandas are designed for stargazing, and the central boma hosts outdoor dining under the clearest skies in Africa.

The great zebra and wildebeest migration — second only to the Serengeti in scale — moves through this landscape during the green season. A rooftop platform provides unobstructed views for seasonal migration watching and night-sky observation. Local stone, adobe, and thatch are the primary building materials — all sourced locally, all chosen to blend with the ancient landscape. Solar power and water-saving technologies ensure a minimal footprint in this fragile pan ecosystem. Nights here are unlike anywhere else. With zero light pollution across hundreds of kilometres, the Milky Way arches overhead with a clarity that stops conversation. San celestial knowledge is woven into every stargazing session.
